Description
Management Fundamentals: Taking Up the Role and Driving Action
The essential reference points for stepping into a management role and delivering results with your team
- 3 days — 21 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Management is not improvised, and it is not simply an extension of the technical expertise that earned the promotion. It is a profession with its own practices: setting direction, delegating, correcting course, recognising effort.
Two days to establish the fundamentals of the role, practise on the situations that genuinely cause difficulty, and leave with a management posture that is chosen rather than endured.
Learning objectives
- Position your role, responsibilities and room for manoeuvre
- Adapt your approach to each team member's level of autonomy
- Set clear objectives and monitor their achievement
- Conduct everyday management conversations: delegation, course correction, feedback
- Sustain motivation and team cohesion day to day
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Positioning Yourself in the Management Role
What the organisation genuinely expects
- The three registers: delivering, organising, developing people
- Moving from technical expertise to responsibility for a team
- Decision-making scope, duty of loyalty, area of autonomy
- Identifying the explicit and implicit expectations of senior management
2Adapting Your Management to Individuals
The same gesture does not produce the same effect
- Assessing autonomy and motivation by activity, not by person
- The four styles: directing, coaching, participative, delegating
- Common errors: over-controlling the autonomous, abandoning the beginner
- Adjusting your style as the team member develops
3Setting Objectives and Delegating
From intention to result
- Framing an objective that is verifiable and accepted
- Distinguishing delegation, task allocation and offloading
- Defining the level of autonomy and the control points
- Following up without hounding: rhythm and format of checkpoints
4Regulating: Feedback, Recognition and Course Correction
The conversations we postpone
- Structuring feedback around observable facts
- Recognising work delivered without falling into empty ritual
- Conducting a course-correction conversation: preparation, wording, commitment, follow-up
- Addressing tension before it becomes a conflict
Who is it for
Newly appointed managers · managers in post who have had no initial management training · specialists moving into team leadership.
