Description

Managing Alongside Your Technical Role: Balancing Delivery, Leadership and Priorities

Lead a team without stepping away from your technical role, and hold both positions without setting one against the other

  • 4 days — 28 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

Many team leaders supervise a team while still delivering their own technical workload. Management then comes second to operational urgencies: reviews postponed, team meetings cancelled, decisions taken in corridors. In the end, the team operates without a clearly identified lead.

Four days to embed management into an already demanding role: identifying the management actions that cannot be skipped, building them into your own organisation, holding short but regular conversations and handing over part of your technical activity. The programme starts from the real constraints of each participant.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish essential management actions from those that can wait
  • Build management time into an already demanding schedule
  • Hold short follow-up conversations with each team member
  • Delegate part of your technical activity to your team
  • Decide between an operational urgency and a request from the team

What makes this programme different

The programme starts from each participant's actual workload rather than a theoretical job description
A typical week integrating management time is built during the session
Short follow-up conversations are practised in their real format and then refined

Programme

1Two Roles, One Diary

Positioning the management share of your role

  • Define what genuinely falls under team leadership within your activity
  • Identify the management actions you systematically postpone
  • Measure the time actually available
  • Clarify your responsibilities with your own line manager

2The Essential Actions

What cannot be dropped

  • Identify the minimum routines to maintain
  • Give an instruction and feedback within short time slots
  • Track activity without multiplying reporting sheets
  • Retain visibility over the team's workload

3Short and Regular Conversations

Staying connected with each individual

  • Structure a follow-up conversation lasting a few minutes
  • Prepare the topics to be covered before the discussion
  • Give feedback on a piece of completed work
  • Address a difficulty before it becomes entrenched

4Handing Over Your Technical Activity

Delegating to free up time

  • Identify the technical tasks that can be handed over
  • Support the skills development of the person taking over
  • Set the level of autonomy and the checkpoints
  • Accept a result achieved differently from your own way

5Making Daily Trade-Offs

Choosing between operational urgency and the team

  • Prioritise between a client request and a request from the team
  • Postpone or decline while explaining your criteria
  • Protect management time in your diary
  • Build your typical week and hold to it

Who is it for
