Description

Neuroscience and Learning: Separating Myths from Evidence, Designing and Delivering

Turning what we know about memory into pedagogical choices that genuinely work

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Neuroscience features heavily in conversations about training, but it usually arrives in the form of shortcuts: learning styles, right brain versus left brain, fixed attention spans. Trainers struggle to tell what is solid from what is simply a slogan.

These two days sort it out. Participants identify the most common neuromyths, understand how attention, memory and emotion operate during learning, then rework one of their own sessions by building in spaced repetition and active retrieval. They leave with a design grid and a revised session.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish established findings on learning from the neuromyths circulating in training
  • Explain the role of attention, working memory and consolidation
  • Design a session that integrates spaced repetition and active retrieval
  • Formulate feedback that supports learner progress
  • Adapt pace and materials to limit cognitive overload

What makes this programme different

Each common neuromyth is tested against what memory research actually shows
Participants rework a session they already deliver rather than a fictional case
A design grid focused on retention is built and tested during the session

Programme

1What We Know About Learning

Establishing solid foundations before changing practice

  • Attention, perception and information filtering in a training setting
  • Working memory, long-term memory and consolidation
  • The role of emotion and the sense of competence
  • The most widespread neuromyths and the reasons behind their appeal

2Attention and Cognitive Load

Staying within what the learner can process

  • Signs of overload in a group and how the trainer responds
  • Breaking dense content into manageable units
  • The effect of overloaded materials on comprehension
  • Alternating formats and managing break times

3Designing for Retention

Building the session around recall

  • Spaced repetition and scheduling recall points across a learning path
  • Active retrieval through quizzes, reformulation or recitation
  • Varying examples and changing contexts
  • The place of error in building knowledge
  • Anchoring content in participants' workplace situations

4Delivering and Assessing

Supporting effort during and after the session

  • Descriptive and corrective feedback rather than overall judgement
  • Motivation, autonomy and the sense of progress
  • Formative assessment built into the flow of the session
  • Transfer to the workplace and follow-up after the programme

Who is it for

Occasional or full-time trainers, instructional designers, learning and development managers, mentors and teachers who wish to ground their pedagogical choices in how learning actually works.
