Description

Non-Discrimination in Hiring: Sound Criteria, Clear Records, Defensible Decisions

One day to ground every selection decision in the role itself and to be able to account for it afterwards

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

An application is set aside on a hunch and the interview record keeps no trace of it. Several months later the candidate asks for an explanation. The recruiter, acting in good faith, can no longer retrieve the criteria used or the reasons behind the choice, and the organisation finds itself unable to justify its decision.

This one-day programme is designed for experienced recruiters. It covers the selection criteria that must be excluded, the questions to avoid in interviews and the practices that produce an excluding effect without any such intention. Participants audit their own job advertisements and scorecards, then work on the traceability of decisions so that every choice can be explained through factors directly linked to the role.

Learning objectives

  • Identify criteria that must not be used in selection and those that genuinely reflect the requirements of the role
  • Spot wording in a job advertisement that screens out candidates without justification
  • Rephrase an interview question that touches on a candidate's private life
  • Build an assessment scorecard based on criteria linked to the actual work
  • Keep the records needed to justify a selection decision
  • Respond to a request for explanation from an unsuccessful candidate

What makes this programme different

An audit of the job advertisements and scorecards participants actually use
Contentious interview questions rephrased one by one during the session
An exercise in justifying a rejection decision using written records alone
