Description

Non-Verbal Communication: Observe, Interpret and Adjust Your Posture

Read body-language signals in professional exchanges without jumping to hasty conclusions

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

In a meeting or an interview, part of the message travels outside the words. Averted eyes, folded arms, a silence that lasts too long: everyone interprets, often too quickly and sometimes wrongly. Misunderstandings arise as much from these approximate readings as from what is actually said.

Three hours to learn to observe before interpreting, to place a signal back in its context and to adjust your own posture. The session is built on guided observation and short paired role-play exercises, with particular attention to the multicultural working environment of the Gulf.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish factual observation from interpretation
  • Identify the main categories of body-language signals in an exchange
  • Place a signal back in its context before drawing a conclusion
  • Adjust your own posture to support your message

What makes this programme different

Practice in separating what you see from what you assume
Guided paired observation of short exchanges
A reasoned caution against simplistic body-language checklists

Programme

1See Before You Interpret

Observation comes before conclusion

  • Describe a behaviour without adding meaning to it
  • Identify your own interpretation biases
  • Distinguish an isolated signal from a cluster of indicators
  • Weigh the influence of context and cultural habits

2The Registers of the Body

What posture, voice and gaze reveal

  • Observe posture, orientation and distance
  • Listen to pace, volume and silences
  • Spot gestures of comfort and of withdrawal
  • Identify mismatches between words and attitude

3Adjusting Your Own Communication

Staying consistent between what you say and what you show

  • Align voice, gaze and posture with your intention
  • Adapt your gestures to the format of the exchange
  • Rephrase as soon as a mismatch appears
  • Check the effect produced on the other person
