Description

Onboarding New Hires: Preparing, Supporting and Securing the Probation Period

Two days to turn a new employee's arrival into a written onboarding journey that is genuinely delivered

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

The contract is signed, yet the welcome often amounts to an access badge, a laptop that has not arrived and a quick tour of the office. The new joiner spends weeks working out the boundaries of the role. The line manager improvises for lack of a written pathway, and a departure during the probation period sends the recruitment process back to square one.

These 14 hours are designed for those who already recruit and now want to structure what happens next. Participants build an onboarding journey shared between human resources, the line manager and the team. They define each stage, from preparing for the arrival through to the end-of-probation review. Each participant leaves with a template pathway adapted to their own job families and a tracking sheet for new arrivals.

Learning objectives

  • Allocate roles between human resources, the line manager and the receiving team
  • Prepare the equipment and administrative set-up before day one
  • Build an onboarding pathway with clear milestones across the first weeks
  • Conduct follow-up meetings and the end-of-probation review
  • Identify the signals of an onboarding that is failing and act before the person leaves

What makes this programme different

A written onboarding pathway, with roles allocated, for one of the participant's own job families
The onboarding buddy role explored through role-play, including its limits
A new-arrival tracking sheet ready to be adopted by the department
