Description

Power BI and AI: Enriching Analysis, Validating and Commenting on Your Dashboards

Use the artificial intelligence features of Power BI without losing control of your figures

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Power BI dashboards deliver curves, rarely explanations. When a variance appears, the analyst goes back into the model, tests segmentations manually and produces commentary too late in the cycle. The built-in artificial intelligence features promise to speed this work up, yet they are often switched on without method and their output is reused without verification.

This short session goes straight to the point: which features to use, which models they work on and how to check what they return. You leave with an enriched report and a verification method.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the assisted analysis features available in Power BI and the conditions for using them
  • Use automatic explanation visuals to guide a root-cause investigation
  • Query a model in natural language and correct imprecise answers
  • Verify a result suggested by the tool by tracing it back to the source data
  • Write analytical commentary supported by verified evidence

What makes this programme different

The work is carried out on an incomplete data model in order to expose the real limits of assisted features
Every result proposed by the tool is systematically cross-checked against the source data
Participants leave with a checklist to apply before releasing an enriched report

Programme

1Preparing the model

No clean model, no assisted analysis

  • Conditions a model must meet to be usable
  • Naming fields and measures to support querying
  • Hierarchies and date tables that explanations depend on
  • Spotting the columns that distort automated results

2Enriching the analysis

Making a variance speak

  • Visuals that explain increases and decreases
  • Finding the segments that account for a gap
  • Anomaly detection on a time series
  • Querying the report in natural language
  • Rephrasing a question that has been misinterpreted

3Checking and publishing

Standing behind what the dashboard states

  • Verifying a result by returning to the source data
  • Common gaps between displayed correlation and actual cause
  • Disclosures to add to a visual produced by assisted analysis
  • Writing short, defensible commentary
  • Sharing and refreshing the enriched report

Who is it for

Analysts, management controllers and reporting officers who already produce Power BI reports and wish to deepen the analysis they deliver.

Prerequisites

Be able to create a Power BI report, build visuals and work with a simple data model.
