Description

Project Delivery: Scoping, Planning, Risk Management and Closure

The five habits that keep a project within its scope, its schedule and its budget

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Projects rarely derail overnight. They drift because the requirement was never written down clearly, because the schedule ignores dependencies, because the risks identified at kick-off are no longer tracked, and because nobody dares to say that a milestone will be missed. The occasional project leader discovers these mechanisms when it is already too late to correct them.

Two days to install the five essentials of project delivery: scoping, work breakdown and scheduling, risk management, team leadership and closure. Each participant applies the approach to a live project and leaves with their own tools completed.

Learning objectives

  • Write a project brief that sets the scope and the deliverables
  • Break the project down into work packages and build a schedule with its dependencies
  • Identify risks and define the associated treatment actions
  • Run steering meetings and manage variances
  • Organise project closure and the lessons-learned review

What makes this programme different

Tools are completed on a real project brought by the participant
A steering meeting announcing a delay is role-played and then debriefed
The risk register is revisited twice during the programme to demonstrate its live use

Programme

1Scoping the project

Writing the requirement before starting

  • Clarify the request and the sponsor's business objectives
  • Define the scope and state clearly what is excluded
  • Identify the stakeholders and their level of influence
  • Write the project brief and have it approved

2Breaking down and scheduling

From deliverable to a realistic date

  • Break the project down into work packages and deliverable tasks
  • Estimate effort and identify critical tasks
  • Build the schedule taking dependencies into account
  • Check the actual availability of contributors

3Managing risks and variances

Anticipating rather than reacting

  • Identify risks and assess their severity and probability
  • Define preventive actions and fallback options
  • Track progress using observable evidence
  • Handle requests to change the scope

4Leading the team and closing the project

Mobilising without hierarchical authority

  • Allocate roles and formalise each person's commitments
  • Run team meetings and produce useful minutes
  • Conduct formal acceptance of deliverables with the sponsor
  • Organise the lessons-learned review and handover to operations

Who is it for

Occasional project leaders, activity managers and staff required to run a cross-functional project without it being their main role.
