Description

Purchasing Negotiation Beyond Conflict: De-escalate, Negotiate and Rebalance

Handling deadlocked purchasing negotiations where the relationship has deteriorated and the balance of power has shifted

  • 3 days — 21 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Expert
  • Up to 6 participants

Some purchasing negotiations are no longer a matter of technique: the supplier holds the dominant position, the relationship has hardened through successive disputes and every exchange becomes an ordeal. Conventional preparation and argumentation methods are no longer enough, because the deadlock has become relational as much as commercial.

Three days to address these situations using the Beyond Conflict approach: identifying the true nature of the deadlock, interrupting escalation, rebuilding a space for discussion and gradually rebalancing the relationship. The cases worked on are the deadlocked negotiations brought by participants, replayed until a workable outcome is reached.

Learning objectives

  • Diagnose the nature of the deadlock in a deteriorated negotiation
  • Identify escalation mechanisms and interrupt them
  • Conduct a meeting with a counterpart in a dominant position
  • Restore a space for discussion after a breakdown of trust
  • Build exit scenarios acceptable to both parties
  • Rebalance the relationship with a strategic supplier over the long term

What makes this programme different

The cases addressed are the deadlocked negotiations actually experienced by participants
Meetings are filmed and broken down sequence by sequence with the group
The Beyond Conflict approach is applied from diagnosis through to the exit plan

Programme

1Diagnosing the deadlock

Naming what is really blocking progress

  • Distinguish substantive disagreement from relationship breakdown
  • Analyse mutual dependency and its effects on the balance of power
  • Identify the unstated interests of each party
  • Assess the fallback solutions genuinely available
  • Map the influential stakeholders on the supplier side and internally

2Understanding escalation

What turns a disagreement into a conflict

  • Identify escalation triggers within an exchange
  • Recognise your own reactions under pressure
  • Distinguish the stated position from the underlying interest
  • Analyse the effect of threats and ultimatums on what follows

3De-escalating and reopening discussion

Regaining the floor without conceding

  • Interrupt an escalation sequence during a meeting
  • Handle a personal attack without amplifying it
  • Reframe interests to shift the terms of the debate
  • Propose a new discussion framework accepted by both parties
  • Rebuild trust through short commitments that are kept

4Negotiating from a weak position

When the balance of power is not on your side

  • Prepare your room for manoeuvre in a situation of dependency
  • Broaden the scope of the negotiation beyond price
  • Build exit scenarios and rank them
  • Use time and internal support as levers
  • Conclude a partial agreement to restart the relationship

5Rebalancing over time

Moving out of dependency step by step

  • Build a dependency reduction plan
  • Establish a review rhythm with the supplier
  • Address disputes before they contaminate the relationship
  • Track the commitments made by both sides
  • Decide whether to maintain or exit the relationship
