Description

The Consultant Role: Framing the Assignment, Analysing and Presenting Findings

Structure a consulting assignment from the initial request through to an accepted recommendation

  • 0.75 days — 5.25 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

Consulting assignments rarely fail on technical grounds. They derail when the request has not been reframed, when the scope widens without compensation, or when findings are presented without the sponsor having been involved along the way. The consultant is left with a report that nobody implements.

This five-and-a-quarter-hour virtual module builds the posture and method of the consultant, whether internal or external. It covers reframing the request and drafting the assignment proposal, then information-gathering and analysis techniques. Presenting findings and supporting implementation bring the programme to a close.

Learning objectives

  • Reframe a vague request into verifiable assignment objectives
  • Draft an assignment proposal setting out scope and deliverables
  • Conduct interviews and field observations to gather information
  • Analyse the data collected and build prioritised recommendations
  • Present findings to a sponsor and secure their buy-in

What makes this programme different

Reframing the request is worked on using cases brought by participants
An interview guide is built and then tested in pairs
The presentation of findings is assessed on its ability to trigger a decision rather than on its formatting
