Description

The Occasional Trainer: Preparing, Delivering and Leading the Group

Twenty-one hours to help a subject-matter expert share knowledge without overwhelming the room

  • 3 days — 21 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The expert asked to train colleagues knows the subject inside out. That is precisely what makes knowledge transfer difficult. They work through everything they know, forget that the group is starting from scratch and misjudge the time available. Participants leave with notes they cannot use, and the expert concludes that training is not for them.

These 21 hours are designed for professionals who train others alongside their main role. The work begins with filtering expertise and building a realistic session plan. It then moves on to delivery techniques, group participation and checking what has actually been learned. Each participant delivers several times and improves on the basis of the feedback received.

Learning objectives

  • Select from your expertise what is genuinely useful to the target audience
  • Write a session plan that is realistic given the time available
  • Explain a technical concept to an audience unfamiliar with it
  • Deliver a sequence alternating input, demonstration and practice
  • Involve a group without losing track of your programme
  • Check at the end of each sequence what participants are able to do

What makes this programme different

Three delivery practice rounds per participant with filmed feedback between each round
Dedicated work on making technical content accessible to a non-specialist audience
A ready-to-use session plan built around each participant's real subject
