Description

Training Evaluation: Measuring Learning, Tracking Impact and Reporting Results

Seven hours to move beyond the satisfaction survey and show what your training has actually changed

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

At the end of every session the feedback forms come back with strong scores. Three months later, nobody can say whether working practices have shifted. Management asks for evidence of effectiveness, the sponsor asks for indicators, and the trainer has nothing more than an average satisfaction rating that says nothing about the skills people gained.

These 7 hours address evaluation across all of its levels. Participants build an assessment aligned with a learning objective, rework their end-of-session questionnaire, set up a delayed measurement involving both the learner and the line manager, then prepare the presentation of results to the sponsor.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish the levels of training evaluation and the purpose each one serves
  • Build an assessment that genuinely measures the achievement of a learning objective
  • Design an end-of-session questionnaire that can be used to improve the course
  • Set up a delayed evaluation of transfer to the workplace
  • Present results to a sponsor in a form they can act on

What makes this programme different

A learning assessment built and tested on one of the participant's own live programmes
A question-by-question redesign of the end-of-session questionnaire
A delayed measurement framework involving the learner, the line manager and the trainer

Programme

1Levels and purposes of evaluation

Evaluating what, and for whom

  • Satisfaction, learning, transfer and effects on business activity
  • The distinct expectations of the sponsor, the funding stakeholder and the learner
  • Choosing which levels to implement for a given programme
  • Alignment with quality management requirements such as ISO 21001 principles

2Measuring learning at the end of the course

Evidencing what has been learned

  • Alignment between the learning objective and the assessment
  • Assessment formats for knowledge and for practical professional skills
  • Building an explicit marking grid
  • Entry-level positioning and comparison with the exit assessment

3Transfer to the workplace and reporting

Several months later

  • Observable indicators of changed practice
  • Gathering input from the line manager and the learner
  • Analysing barriers to transfer and corrective actions
  • The reporting format submitted to the sponsor
