Description

Trello — Visual Project Tracking: Building a Board, Monitoring and Sharing

Structuring a project into columns and cards so progress can be read without a status meeting

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Online board tools are adopted quickly within a team and deteriorate just as quickly. Columns multiply. Cards with no owner and no due date pile up, and the board ends up contradicting the official project tracking. Everyone then returns to their own personal list and the shared tool falls into disuse.

Three hours online to build a board that lasts. Columns are defined according to the actual flow of work, then the rules for writing cards and the update rhythm are agreed. The session focuses on the visual tracking method and is supported by a collaborative board tool.

Learning objectives

  • Structure a board whose columns reflect the actual flow of work
  • Write cards that include an owner
  • a due date and a completion criterion
  • Limit work in progress to prevent the board from becoming cluttered
  • Run a progress review directly from the board
  • Define usage rules shared by the whole team

What makes this programme different

The board for a real project is built and populated during the session
Card-writing rules are drafted collectively and then tested
The typical failings of an abandoned board are diagnosed and corrected on a worked example
