Description

UX Design and Usability: Analysing User Behaviour, Designing and Testing Interfaces

Design interfaces based on real user behaviour rather than the project team's assumptions

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Digital projects rarely fail on technical grounds: they fail because no one has observed how users actually work. Screens are signed off in committee, journeys grow longer, features pile up, and negative feedback only arrives after go-live, at the point where corrections cost the most.

These two days establish a complete method: gathering real user needs, mapping journeys, applying usability principles to screens, rapid prototyping and testing with users. Each participant works on an existing interface of their choice and leaves with deliverables that can be handed directly to their team.

Learning objectives

  • Gather user needs through observation and interviews
  • Formalise personas and journeys that the project team can use
  • Apply usability principles to screens and forms
  • Produce a functional prototype before any development phase
  • Run a user test and make use of the observations collected

What makes this programme different

Each participant brings an existing interface and reworks it throughout the two days
A user test is run live in the session with a participant discovering the interface
The deliverables produced can be handed straight to a development team

Programme

1Understanding Users

Starting from actual behaviour rather than assumptions

  • Observation methods in the working environment
  • Conducting user interviews and the biases to avoid
  • Building personas from real data
  • Identifying critical tasks and points of friction

2User Journeys and Information Architecture

Providing a clear structure

  • Mapping the user journey and its breaking points
  • Organising content and navigation logic
  • Naming sections in the users' own vocabulary
  • Prioritising features according to their practical value

3Interface Usability Principles

Making the screen immediately understandable

  • Usability criteria applied to screens and forms
  • Visual hierarchy and guiding the user
  • Error handling and feedback messages
  • Legibility and contrast in support of accessibility
  • Consistency across the screens of a single product

4Prototyping and User Testing

Validating before building

  • Moving from sketch to interactive prototype
  • The level of finish expected at each project stage
  • Protocol for a short user test
  • Collecting observations and prioritising corrections

Who is it for
