Description

Lean Startup: Framing Hypotheses, Testing Fast and Evolving the Offer

Turn an intuition into testable hypotheses and decide early whether to pursue or change course

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

An innovative project can absorb months of development before it ever meets its market. When the first customers arrive, the gap between the offer that was built and what the market actually expects is paid for in rework. Teams lack a framework for deciding early what deserves to be pursued and what should be abandoned.

Two days devoted to the Lean Startup approach: framing value and growth hypotheses, designing a minimum viable product, selecting indicators that trigger a decision and running build-measure-learn loops. Unlike an approach centred on usage, the guiding thread here remains the business model.

Learning objectives

  • Frame the critical hypotheses of a project and rank them by level of risk
  • Design a minimum viable product suited to the hypothesis being tested
  • Build an experimentation protocol and its success criterion
  • Select indicators that trigger a decision
  • Decide between persevering, adjusting or changing course

What makes this programme different

Each participant works on their own project from start to finish
Hypotheses are ranked by risk before any development begins
The experimentation dashboard is built and completed during the session

Programme

1Hypotheses and Risk

Naming what has not yet been proven

  • Distinguishing a verified fact from a shared belief
  • Framing value and growth hypotheses
  • Ranking hypotheses by level of risk
  • Selecting the one to be tested first

2Minimum Viable Product

Building just enough to learn

  • Choosing the format of the minimum viable product
  • Reducing scope without emptying the promise
  • Preparing the material shown to first users
  • Estimating the cost and lead time of the experiment

3Measuring and Interpreting

Figures that trigger a decision

  • Defining the success criterion before the test
  • Discarding indicators with no decision-making value
  • Tracking behaviour by cohort
  • Reading an ambiguous result without forcing it

4Deciding and Iterating

Persevere, adjust or change course

  • Interpreting results as a team
  • Identifying the different forms of pivot
  • Revising the business model
  • Planning the next loop

Who is it for

Project owners, founders, product managers and members of innovation teams within established organisations.
