Description

Constructive Feedback: Preparing the Conversation, Stating the Facts and Tracking the Impact

One day to address what is not working and what is working well without damaging the working relationship

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Many managers postpone difficult feedback until the annual appraisal. By then the message arrives too late and takes the employee by surprise. Positive feedback, on the other hand, is often limited to a general thank-you that teaches no one anything.

A full day devoted entirely to the practice of feedback. You learn to prepare a message based on observable facts rather than impressions. You work on phrasing both improvement feedback and recognition feedback. You practise handling reactions of denial, self-justification or withdrawal.

Learning objectives

  • Prepare feedback based on observable and dated facts
  • Deliver improvement feedback without passing judgement on the person
  • Express precise recognition that makes clear what should be repeated
  • Respond to denial
  • self-justification or withdrawal from the employee
  • Establish a regular feedback rhythm within the team

What makes this programme different

Eight to ten practice rounds per participant on situations actually experienced
Work on difficult reactions and not only on delivering the message
A feedback schedule planned for the following three months

  • Balancing the two types of feedback over time
  • Adapting the message to the employee's experience and level of autonomy

3Handling Reactions and Following Up
