Description

Coaching Your Team Members: Questioning, Prompting Reflection and Building Capability

One day to add three coaching tools to your practice and get your team members searching for their own answers

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The team member arrives with a problem and leaves with the manager's solution. The same conversation happens again three weeks later. Your diary fills up with questions the team could handle on its own and autonomy never grows.

One day built around three tools explored in depth: open questioning, the structured step-by-step conversation and mirroring feedback. You practise in trios with an observer who reports back on what they saw. You also learn to spot the situations that do not call for coaching at all and that require corrective feedback or another internal channel.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish the coaching posture from that of the expert and that of the decision-maker
  • Conduct a coaching conversation structured in clear steps
  • Ask open questions that move the team member's thinking forward
  • Mirror back what a team member expresses so they gain perspective
  • Identify situations where coaching is not the right response

What makes this programme different

Three tools explored in depth rather than a broad survey of methods
Conversations role-played in trios with an observer who reports what they saw
Explicit identification of the limits of the role and of situations to redirect elsewhere

Programme

1First tool: open questioning

Prompting the search rather than giving the answer

  • Difference between an open question, a leading question and disguised advice
  • Questions that help clarify an objective or an obstacle
  • Using silence after a question
  • Resisting the temptation to provide the solution

2Second tool: the structured conversation

A step-by-step sequence

  • Clarifying the request and the expected outcome
  • Reviewing the current situation and what has already been tried
  • Exploring options raised by the team member themselves
  • Choosing an action and committing to a date

3Third tool: mirroring feedback

Reflecting back to create perspective

  • Restating the content and what is implied between the lines
  • Reflecting back a contradiction without judgement
  • Moving from the mirror to the team member's own decision
  • Situations that call for corrective feedback or another internal channel

Who is it for

Front-line managers and team leaders as well as mentors and subject-matter referents responsible for developing team members.
