Description

IFRS 9 Hedging Derivatives: Qualifying, Measuring and Accounting for Hedge Relationships

Turn an FX or interest rate hedge into compliant accounting entries without distorting the reading of profit or loss

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Groups across the region hedge their currency and interest rate exposures, yet the accounting translation remains a technical sticking point. Without a documented hedge relationship, fair value movements on the derivative flow straight through profit or loss and create volatility that the finance function struggles to explain. In practice, the documentation is often assembled after the instrument has been put in place.

This three-hour workshop addresses hedge accounting under IFRS 9 through worked numerical cases. Participants qualify the hedge relationship, measure the derivative, calculate the effective portion and post the entries to profit or loss or to other comprehensive income.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish cash flow hedges from fair value hedges
  • Assemble the documentation required when the hedge relationship is established
  • Measure a foreign exchange or interest rate derivative at the reporting date
  • Calculate the effective portion and account for measured ineffectiveness
  • Post hedge accounting entries and prepare the related note disclosures

What makes this programme different

A forward foreign exchange contract and an interest rate swap are worked through end to end on numerical cases
The hedge documentation is drafted during the session using a reusable template
The impact of the entries on profit or loss and on equity is mapped line by line
