Description

Instructional Design and Generative AI: Design, Write and Review

Apply generative AI at the right stages of course design without outsourcing the pedagogy

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Instructional designers already use generative assistants to produce scenarios or assessments. Results come quickly but often lack grounding. Objectives are poorly framed, activities follow one another without progression, and nothing rests on an analysis of the target audience. Reviewing the output ends up costing more than writing it.

This three-hour workshop positions generative AI within a controlled design process. Participants test prompts on their own modules and build criteria for accepting, reworking or rejecting automated output. Questions of sources and content ownership are addressed.

Learning objectives

  • Position the contribution of generative AI within the design process
  • Write precise prompts tailored to a specific instructional task
  • Produce a learning scenario and test it against the intended objectives
  • Check the accuracy and relevance of generated content
  • Identify the legal and ethical limits of this use

What makes this programme different

Each participant leaves with a library of prompts applied to their own content
A review grid for generated output that can be used immediately
Work is carried out on real modules brought by participants

Programme

1The design process and where AI adds value

Where the assistant helps and where it hinders

  • Stages of instructional design and expected deliverables
  • Tasks that can be delegated and tasks to retain
  • Audience and objective analysis as a non-automatable foundation
  • Overview of observed uses in learning and development

2Writing effective prompts

Obtaining usable output

  • Structure of a useful prompt: role, context, task and expected format
  • Contribution of learning objectives to the wording
  • Iteration and rephrasing to refine the result
  • Producing case studies, quizzes and activity scenarios

3Reviewing, validating and integrating

Keeping control of quality

  • Checking content and spotting inaccuracies
  • Alignment between objectives, activities and assessment
  • Questions of sources and ownership of the output
  • Informing learners about the use of AI
