Description
Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt: Framing, Measuring and Improving a Process
Contribute to a Lean Six Sigma project and lead a simple improvement initiative yourself
- 3 days — 21 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Improvement initiatives usually fail at the same point: the problem was never quantified. A solution is installed before the starting situation has been measured, and the team is then surprised that the gain cannot be demonstrated. In the end, the approach is seen as one more constraint.
Three days to reach Yellow Belt level: understanding the DMAIC logic, framing a problem with data, mapping a process, tracing root causes and securing the results obtained. The programme prepares participants to contribute to a project led by a Green Belt and to run an improvement initiative of limited scope.
Learning objectives
- Position the Lean Six Sigma approach and the role of the Yellow Belt
- Frame a problem and write the charter for an improvement initiative
- Map a process and identify waste
- Collect and present reliable measurement data
- Identify root causes and prioritise solutions
- Secure results and hand the initiative over to operations
What makes this programme different
Programme
1The DMAIC Logic
A problem is addressed in a set order
- Position Lean and Six Sigma and what each contributes
- Understand the sequence of the five phases
- Identify the Yellow, Green and Black Belt roles
- Distinguish problems that fall within the approach from those that do not
2Defining the Initiative
A clear scope and an expected gain
- State the problem in observable terms
- Set the start and end points of the process concerned
- Identify the process customer and their expectations
- Write the initiative charter and have it approved
3Measuring and Mapping
Facts before opinions
- Build a process map at the useful level of detail
- Identify waste and waiting times
- Select the data to collect and design the data collection plan
- Present the data so that the problem becomes visible
4Analysing Causes
Tracing back to what produces the gap
- List possible causes with the working group
- Structure causes into families
- Prioritise causes according to their actual weight
- Verify a cause through observation or through data
5Improving and Sustaining Results
A gain only exists if it holds
- Generate and select workable solutions
- Test a solution on a small scale before wider roll-out
- Standardise the new operating method
- Put in place the monitoring that prevents any slippage
Who is it for
Operators, technicians and team leaders expected to take part in continuous improvement projects, together with the support functions concerned.
