Description

Manager: Driving Everyday Innovation and Turning Ideas into Action

Create the practical conditions within your team for ideas to surface, be filtered and reach completion

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Ideas already exist within teams but rarely reach the surface. Day-to-day pressure absorbs any room for manoeuvre, one poorly received suggestion discourages the next, and the initiatives that do survive stall for lack of time or support. The manager ends up carrying the innovation agenda alone within the department.

Two days focused on management practice: establishing a setting where making a suggestion is possible, organising short idea-generation sessions, filtering with criteria you are prepared to defend, and supporting experimentation through to a decision. The programme addresses the role of the front-line manager rather than the governance of a project portfolio.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the barriers to making suggestions within your team's way of working
  • Establish short and regular idea-generation sessions
  • Respond to an idea received with an explicit line of reasoning
  • Select the initiatives to be tested using shared criteria
  • Support an experiment through to the decision on whether to continue
  • Recognise contributions, including those that do not lead anywhere

What makes this programme different

Each participant leaves with a team ritual ready to be launched
Turning down an idea is practised in role-play and then reviewed with the group
The diagnosis focuses on how the participant's own team actually works

Programme

1Conditions for making suggestions

Understanding why ideas do not reach the surface

  • Identify the signals that discourage initiative-taking
  • Distinguish a useful mistake from a genuine failing
  • Clarify the scope of autonomy granted to the team
  • Assess your own way of operating as a manager

2Generating ideas

Short formats that fit into day-to-day work

  • Choose a format suited to the time available
  • Frame a workable opening question
  • Facilitate without steering towards your own solution
  • Establish a ritual that can be sustained over time

3Filtering and responding

Owning your choices without breaking the momentum

  • Build selection criteria that everyone is aware of
  • Respond to an idea you are not taking forward
  • Make the outcome of suggestions visible
  • Balance day-to-day urgency against exploration

4Supporting experimentation

Taking it through to a decision

  • Frame a trial with a defined scope and deadline
  • Free up time and secure the resources required
  • Follow progress without taking the subject back over
  • Close the trial and acknowledge the contribution
