Description

Neuroscience Applied to Learning: Supporting Attention, Memory and Transfer

Two days to rebuild your training sequences on what is actually known about how people learn

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Research on learning circulates widely and is often poorly understood. Appealing claims about learning styles still drive design decisions even though they are strongly contested. At the same time, robust principles on memory and attention remain rarely applied in corporate training rooms.

These 14 hours are designed for experienced trainers who want to review their sessions on firmer ground. Participants separate common myths from established findings, then rework their own content: length of sequences, form of review cycles, the role of error, conditions for effective retrieval, and the arrangements that support transfer back to the workplace.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish common myths about learning from scientifically established findings
  • Explain the role of attention and memory within a training sequence
  • Organise review cycles of a content item to support consolidation
  • Use error and active retrieval as levers for learning
  • Adapt an existing sequence using the principles retained

What makes this programme different

A reasoned sorting between widespread myths and genuinely established findings
Rework of one of the participant's real training sequences in light of each principle covered
Work on review and retrieval conditions beyond the training session itself

Programme

1Key Points on Learning

What is known and what is merely believed

  • How attention and memory work in general terms
  • Widespread myths and the reasons for their success
  • Limits of what can reasonably be claimed today
  • Careful use of these findings in the trainer's own discourse

2Attention and Cognitive Load

Avoiding saturation in order to enable learning

  • Factors that capture attention and factors that scatter it
  • Effects of an overloaded slide or handout on understanding
  • Segmenting sequences and positioning breaks
  • Instructions that reduce unnecessary effort

3Memory and Retrieval

Bringing the information back

  • Difference between recognising and being able to recall
  • Value of review cycles spaced over time
  • Active retrieval and the forms it can take in the room
  • The place of error in consolidation

4Transfer to the Workplace

From the training room to the job

  • Conditions that support application on return to work
  • Closing activities oriented towards action
  • Involving line managers in follow-up
  • Reactivation arrangements some time after the session

Who is it for
