Description

Remote Management: Structuring, Tracking and Maintaining Connection

Lead a dispersed or hybrid team while maintaining connection and clear visibility of the work actually delivered

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

At a distance, managers lose the information they used to pick up without thinking. A hesitation in someone's voice or friction between two colleagues goes unnoticed until it turns into an incident. Team members working remotely often feel they are treated differently from those who see the manager every day.

These two days focus on the practical organisation of remote and hybrid working. Each participant builds a rhythm of team rituals suited to their own set-up, then works on tracking activity without intrusive control and on conducting sensitive conversations over video.

Learning objectives

  • Define shared ways of working for a dispersed team
  • Build a rhythm of rituals suited to the team's set-up
  • Track progress without resorting to constant monitoring
  • Select the right communication channel for each type of message
  • Conduct a difficult conversation over video

What makes this programme different

A calendar of rituals built by each participant for their own team
Availability rules and response-time commitments formalised during the session
Sensitive conversations role-played over video, then reviewed for pace and silences

Programme

1What Distance Changes

Identifying what is lost and what is gained

  • The information a manager picks up in person and loses at a distance
  • The effects of distance on engagement and isolation
  • Hybrid set-ups and the imbalances they create
  • The risk of inequity between on-site and remote team members

2Setting the Ground Rules

Explicit rules rather than implicit habits

  • Defining availability windows and response times
  • Choosing the right channel for each type of message
  • Clarifying what belongs in writing and what requires a direct conversation
  • Building these rules with the team so that they hold

3Setting the Rhythm and Tracking Activity

Keeping visibility without monitoring

  • Building a set of individual and collective rituals
  • Running a one-to-one review remotely that remains useful
  • Tracking progress through deliverables and milestones
  • Spotting the warning signs of a remote colleague disengaging

4Sustaining Relationships and Addressing Tensions

Sensitive conversations through a screen

  • Preparing a difficult conversation to be held over video
  • Identifying a misunderstanding created by a written message
  • Addressing tension between two colleagues working apart
  • Maintaining cohesion in a team that rarely meets in person
