Description

Stepping Into Your First Management Role: Setting the Tone and Uniting Your Team

The first few weeks in the role shape how your team will see you for a long time to come

  • 3 days — 21 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A move into management plays out quickly. You have to introduce yourself, understand a team you did not choose and address the first performance gaps, often without having had time to observe.

Early mistakes are costly: a promise made too soon, a former peer treated differently, authority that was never established.

This three-day programme focuses on the transition period itself. It covers preparing your arrival, diagnosing the team, running the first one-to-one meetings, making the first decisions and building the relationship with your own line manager. Every participant leaves with a plan for their first weeks.

Learning objectives

  • Prepare your arrival and how you introduce yourself to the team
  • Carry out a diagnosis of the team and how it actually works
  • Conduct a first one-to-one meeting with each team member
  • Establish ground rules without waiting for the first incident
  • Position the relationship with former peers who are now team members
  • Build an action plan for your first weeks

What makes this programme different

The first-weeks plan is written during the session and presented to the group
Introductory one-to-one meetings are role-played with contrasting team member profiles
Sensitive early situations are addressed using cases brought by participants
