Description

The Hiring Manager: Preparing Interviews, Questioning and Selecting

Three hours online to prepare a recruitment interview and decide on factual evidence

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Interviews are improvised between two meetings. Questions change from one candidate to the next and comparison becomes impossible. The decision rests on a general impression, and doubt sets in during the probation period.

Three hours online focused on the interview itself. You define your criteria before meeting candidates. You build a common interview structure and questions that prompt candidates to describe real situations they have handled. You leave with an interview guide drafted during the session and ready to use for your next hire.

Learning objectives

  • Define the role requirement and selection criteria before meeting candidates
  • Build an interview structure that is the same for every candidate
  • Ask questions that prompt candidates to describe real situations
  • Compare candidates against observable criteria
  • Communicate the decision to unsuccessful candidates

What makes this programme different

A short online format focused on the interview itself rather than the full recruitment process
An interview guide drafted during the session and ready for immediate use
Sample questions developed around each participant's actual vacancy

Programme

1Framing the Role Before You Meet Candidates

Requirement and criteria

  • Describing the role through actual activities rather than a job title
  • Essential criteria and desirable criteria
  • Dividing responsibilities between the manager and the human resources function
  • Preparing the interview structure to be used with every candidate

2Conducting the Interview

Questioning and listening

  • Opening the interview and outlining how it will run
  • Questions that prompt precise accounts of past situations
  • Checking stated facts without putting the candidate on trial
  • Allowing time for the candidate's questions and giving a realistic view of the role

3Deciding and Communicating

Compare, then respond

  • Taking notes during the interview that remain usable afterwards
  • Comparing candidates criterion by criterion
  • Identifying the biases that weigh on the final decision
  • Responding to unsuccessful candidates and next steps

Who is it for

Managers who recruit for their own teams as well as department heads and line managers involved in selection interviews.
